Tips for international students:
A) Steps to take before coming to the United States of America:
- Define and Work Towards your goal
- Choose your program and your major while applying to CSUEB www.csueb.edu
- Prepare for GMAT and TOEFL a) www.mba.com b) www.ets.org
- Ask for Letters of Recommendation
- Compose Your Statement of Purpose
- Request Your Transcripts
- Prepare And Mail Your Application Forms and Fees as per the directions of the university
- Once you get your I-20 take the following steps
- Inform School of Your Choice
- Apply for Your Visa
- Get a Medical Exam
- Book an Airline Ticket
- Pack Your Things Weather and temperatures for Hayward, CA
B) Once you are in the CSUEB Campus
- Applying for Social Security – http://www.ssa.gov
- Banking – Important to open a bank account near a place where you reside. Options are Bank of America, Chase, Wells Fargo etc.
- Finding long-term housing – Please do look at the University website http://wwwsa.csueastbay.edu/~houseweb/ for details for housing accommodation. Mainly Pioneer Heights and International House and International House are on campus. For outside accommodation it is best to go to www.craigslist.org or http://www.essexapartmenthomes.com/apartment/5UO7X4382386
- Getting telephone service – Choose a mobile service that suits your need. For e.g. AT & T, T-Mobile, Sprint etc to name a few. However, most mobile services have plans as per the zip code. So please keep a note of that before choosing your service.
- Grocery shopping – There are quite a few supermarkets near the university e.g. Food Source, Costco ( membership-based), 99 cent shops, Safeway etc
- Transportation – The University provides a free bus service for students to and from the Bart Station. For local travel go to MapQuest.com and other travel websites like http://www.citysearch.com/,www.eastbay.worldweb.com/Maps/
- Driving License and California I-Card - http://dmv.ca.gov/
- Health and Safety – Make sure you sign up for Insurance http://www.csuhayward.edu/CIE/f1students/insurance.html or Study-USA plan
- Enroll for classes – Most importantly do not forget to enroll and register for the quarter for your classes. Keep checking the important dates for the same.
